eBay makes the world wide web a little less wide

Published by under Uncategorized

There are 7,051 eBay members in my town. I never particularly thought about that before, but eBay’s new promotion is all about your community.

Ending tomorrow, this promotion gave points for eBay transactions (buying or selling), charity listings and community participation. Called Community Counts, zip codes were made teams and judged (on a ratio basis so that towns like New York wouldn’t automatically win) and ranked.

I am happy to report that, while my town is a pathetic just under 6,000 ranking, the #1 town is so far Lumberton, NJ. Yeah, I’ve lived in NJ all my life and I have never heard of it either. All the same, it’s nice to see Jersey representing!

I must say, I like the very out of the box marketing and community building things eBay has introduced to the site lately and I plan to cover them all on this page in the next few weeks.

While they could have done a better job marketing this promotion (I didn’t even know it was going on until yesterday and I am on the site several times a day, every day), it was definitely a very cool idea and it’s certainly the first time I felt local pride on the Internet.

Lethologica: forgetting the word you want to use

Now, naturally, I will totally forget that word the next time it comes up.
