5/50 Fray by Joss Whedon
OK, first off, we need some background here. I was selling some DragonBall Z figures on eBay and I needed to look up some of their names and such and found myself combing a lot of DBZ fan sites. A lot of these sites kept referencing the DBZ Manga (which is similar to a graphic novel). Now I used to like hearing about the plots on DBZ back when my brother used to be very into it, but I found the pacing of the amime to be unbearable. So I thought that maybe I would see if reading it was more enjoyable since I could set my own pace. So I went to the library and went through all the graphic novels and manga (which share a section) with the intent of reading the original comics.
No luck. They didn’t have a single DBZ title. However, in my browsing I found the X-Man book below and, next to it, was Fray.
Now the astute among you will have noticed that both the X-Man comic and this book are written by Joss Whedon (aka writer of Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Toy Story, etc). A lot of people have decided that they don’t like him based on never having read or seen a single thing he wrote but that is their own issue to cry to their shrink about. I am not unbiased as I do like the man’s work and have liked it in the past. This book also plays upon the mythos from Buffy of vampires and slayers but you can never have seen three seconds of the show and still be on the same page. It’s also a self-contained story (unlike the X-Man book) so you picked this up tomorrow know exactly as much as anyone else does and you don’t feel like you are missing info.
But holy cow, I don’t care who you are or what style of writing you are into, this is amazing!
Funny, action packed, twists, you name it. Really great stuff. I am not going to get too into it because I don’t want to give anything away but if you are in the library, you may want to pick this up just to give it a shot. Graphic novels are normally not my thing either but you really might want to make an exception for this.
