I’m in love with the Shamwow guy
Vince. You magnificent Shamwow guy, you.
I promised I would cover my obsession with the Shamwow guy and so I will now. I love him.
Why? Because he is all, buy a Shamwow. Or not. See if I give an f*. He comes off as some random guy who has been hired to sell products and doesn’t care. But he is actually the writer, director and owner of both ShamWow and SlapChop which raises him to a new level of awesome because its like a Shakespearean play within a play kind of thing.
On a marketing level, I think he works because he really acts like he doesn’t care and that you are stupid if you don’t buy his product but in a way that doesn’t make you hate him. It’s really effective. I don’t have a need for a Shamwow at all but I really feel like I should get one or he will judge me. It is a really cool way of advertising that just works.
My husband finds him smarmy. I think he is just jealous.
If you have not seen the commercial, familiarize yourself with it below:
My favorite parts:
- “Made in Germany. You know the Germans always make good stuff.” I’m not sure I need to explain that part. It’s just awesome on an epic level because it’s so out in left field.
- “Why do you want to work twice as hard?” He is implying there is something wrong with you if you don’t buy his product. That is awesome.
- “You following me, camera guy?” The Shamwow guy has judged you, camera guy, and found you lacking. He has implied that you are too stupid to understand the wonder of the Shamwow which, no doubt, you are.
- “Shamwow, you’ll be saying wow every time.” I love how he says this. It’s like he is saying it ironically like he thinks its dumb which is genius because he wrote it!!
- “This lasts 10 years, this lasts a week. I don’t know, it sells itself.” This is the best part of the commercial. He’s like, WTF is wrong with you that you haven’t bought a Shamwow already. Why am I even here trying to sell this? This product is so awesome I don’t even have to try and sell it to you.
- “But if you call now, within the next 20 minutes, because we can’t do this all day.” Look, he’s being reasonable. You ask too much of his Shamwow greatness to expect him to offer Shamwows at that price all day. God, you are needy. A great spin in the “if you call now” that every made for TV item has in their commercials.
Interesting trivia:
- The dude’s name is Vince Offer. But here is the really weird part. His honest to God real first name is Offer
- He is an ex-Scientologist
- He sued Anna Nicole Smith for dropping out of a movie he made
