My page a day calendar has an attitude problem

Published by at 11:42 am under External Stimuli

Back in January, I had a $20 no strings attached credit at Kohl’s and didn’t need anything at the time so I bought a shirt and a copy of the Cute Overload calendar for my desk. Both shirt and Cute Overload calendar have served me well so far and I have no complaints.

However, the calendar came with a promotion that allowed me to get a second page-a-day calendar for free via my email. Heck, I said to myself, I enjoy free things so I should sign up.

The selection of the free calendars were pretty limited but I selected one called 365 Meditations and Reflections For Women Who Do Too Much.

I am a woman. I do too much. I like meditating and reflecting on things. In theory, this should be the calendar for me. The back of the book made it sound like it was for female business people so I figured it would be perfect for a cute little inspirational quote of the day or a little bit of advice on time management.

Instead of causing me to meditate and reflect, however, all this calendar does is tick me off. Every single day and I get it in my email and 90% of the time furrow my brow at it and feel irritated.

But, maybe its just me. Here are some examples I have selected at random:

From May 4th:

WHAT MEN HAVE SAID ABOUT WOMEN
“I always tell young men there are three rules: They hate us, we hate them; they’re stronger, they’re smarter; and most important: they don’t play fair.”
—JACK NICHOLSON
No wonder we don’t feel good about ourselves! It’s amazing men and women have any relationships at all.

From April 26th:

HOUSEWORK
“Marry a rich man and you’ll never have to do housework.”
Really? Is this a good goal?

From March 7th:

WHAT MEN HAVE SAID ABOUT WOMEN
“For when a woman is left too much alone, sooner or later she begins to think; and no man knows what she will discover.”
—EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON
Wow! Beware!

Is this not the most passive aggressive calendar on earth? This is not inspirations for women who do too much! This is passive aggressive whining for women who have low self-esteem. I don’t want to start my day out every day with a negative quote and a non-explanation of it. My calendar should not be trying to start a fight with me every day.

I know I should probably unsubscribe but, frankly, I have become weirdly fascinated. Who thought this was a good idea for a calendar? Are there truly people out there who are inspired by this? I’m so perplexed. I feel like this calendar is part of some psych study.

Maybe they figure the women who do too much are too busy to read into it? Help me out with this one, guys. I just don’t get it.

My experience with page-a-day calendars is that they usually disappoint me at some point–especially if they’re supposed to be funny or inspiring! (Well, I suppose the Origami calendar I had a couple years ago was pretty successful, but not even New Yorker cartoons can be hilarious every, single day.)

I expect a certain amount of filler in a Page a Day calendar because 365 days is a long time but so far the only calendar that did not disappoint and was actually good and funny every single day was the Dilbert one.
