Works in Progress Report

Guys… I’ve missed you! I feel like the proper blog posts are me giving a lecture and these kind of blog posts are just sitting down for a nice chat. I feel like I haven’t had a moment of calm in weeks though my brother did visit and few weeks ago and it was very nice to get to spend some time with him.

So, where am I with my various projects? Well, to start with, I’m taking a class on Playwrighting this summer. It’s *much* more work then I anticipated. Every week there is homework (which is often the kind of writing that, while short, is very difficult and takes a while), a reading and then you have to join in the discussion of the reading AND read and critique the work of 2 to 3 other people. This is every single week. From July through Sept. Not to mention that I had to hand in my own 20 page play submission twice over the course of the class (my second submission was last week so that, at least, is finished). Writing and editing like a madwoman amidst all the other things I have to do.  Continue Reading »

Finished my Script Frenzy script! Oh, and you’ll never guess what I’ve been working on…

To be entirely truthful, I actually finished my Script Frenzy script a couple of days ago. As expected, it ended well short of 100 pages. This isn’t a huge problem, especially because it was a stage play, but I don’t feel like it’s fair to call myself a Script Frenzy winner unless I hit 100 pages. So I wrote 20 pages of character descriptions and other writing related directly to my script which I hope will inform the editing process. But even after all that creative stretching, I was still 10 pages behind.

Tonight I decided to set aside all my to do lists and my schedule of writing projects and to just work on whatever I felt like as a reward. I decided to work on… Wife Novel!

I know, I know. You probably thought I abandoned it, didn’t you? I didn’t, I swear. I actually took a break on it for going on two years because I hit a point where I didn’t actually think I was a good enough writer to pull off the story I wanted to tell. I decided to work on Mistress Novel for a while and then return to this project when I’d figured out how to solve its problems. My plan for tonight was just to poke at the story a bit and to write a random scene just for fun but I ended up totally re-outlining the entire project with a whole new plot that I think, hopefully, works better. It simultaneously exciting and depressing. Exciting because I may have finally figured out how to tell the story the way I wanted to tell it. Depressing because I’m going to have to scrap nearly everything I’ve written already. But that was sort of the point, the story wasn’t working in its current form.

As they say, we can rebuild it! Continue Reading »
