“Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning how to dance in the rain.” -Anonymous
So, I heard this quote for the first time today and just wasted all this time looking up who said it to attribute it properly. If you are wondering the same thing, let me save you the time.
The short answer is: no one.
This is a popular motivational poster saying and so the original author was some poor chap on staff at whichever poster company decided to print this up first and slap this quote on a picture of lady dancing with a scarf in silhouette or whatever. So technically this quote is “anonymous” as the name of the original author has never been revealed.
Either way, good quote, random poster writer person. I dig it.

Hey Aceroinox,
Yes, Vivian does quote this quote on her profile but sadly she is not the one that wrote it. Thanks for stopping by!
Hillary – I have used this “anonymous” quote on many of my products in my gift line I manufacture and am being sued be Vivian Greene claiming the rights. Can you provide me any proof that she is NOT the author?
Well this is one of those tricky things where, if she copyrighted an anonymous saying after the fact (which is what it seems like she did) she may now own the phrase. You just need to provide evidence that it was used by others before she used it.
my french teacher wrote it o the blackboard yesterday (live inbelgium so in french) she found that it was Taylor Swift who said it…
Taylor Swift has quoted it recently, but this saying has been around since before she was even born! So, unless she has a time machine, she’s not actually the original author of this.
Thats so interesting!!! I love that quote so much and keep trying to track it down! Where did you find that out from?
It’s by Vivian Greene
She has claimed it after the fact, yes. But she’s not the original author, unfortunately.
Turns out she wrote a book about how she is the original author and the quote often turns up anonymous. Could you provide information for why you believe Vivian is not the original author?
All I can tell you is that this was not the case when I did the research for this post originally.
thank you

From a letter in my possession,
“when life seems to be a never ending storm, cheer up, say a prayer, and learn to dance in the rain”
A quote from a letter from my grandfather to my mother dated May 22nd, 1943.
Hi! This quote is from Seneque, a spanish philosopher born in year 4 BC…
What evidence do you have to support that claim? I see the claim in many places but I don’t see any good evidence like citing a specific work that it comes from.
Wasn’t the poet Kahlil Gibran? I was trying to find it but it seem impossible to find the original source, though he is listed most of the times as the author.
I think that most of you should go back to school!!! It is not from an anonymous writer but a famous philosopher. We learned, and still learn his work in all the French schools.
This quote was from the philosopher Seneque (Sénèque) who died on April 12th, 65 after Christ.
Now it is not anymore a secret. Much love. Thierry
The author is Vivian Greene and yes she is the one. She coined it herself in the 1970s. It is not anonymous at all.
