I’ve mentioned before how truly awesome it is to be a writer in this digital age and see your fans and readers talking about your book or play in real time. Well, look what I found on Twitter:

Talk about a tweet! (I blotted out all the identifying details because the Twitter user was underage.)
If you can’t make it out, it’s a tweet and photo from an actress in an upcoming school production of The Love of Three Oranges showing off both her script (with Princess Ninetta’s lines highlighted) and her dove puppet (Ninetta gets turned into a dove in Act 3 by a magic bobby pin because that’s just the sort of thing that passes for normal in this play).
Seeing this reminded me of when we announced the cast for the very first production of this show. Our Princess Ninetta was an actress named Ashi and as soon as she found out that she was cast, she changed her away message on AIM (this is how we used to communicate before Twitter, youngsters, so just pretend I said, “she changed her Facebook status” just then) to, “I have the title role!” which I found hilarious. See, because Ninetta, before she gets turned into a dove, is an princess… who’s been turned into an orange. (Listen, it’s a weird play. I realize this.) This would make her one of the titular three oranges, see?
Anyway, the point I’m slowly rolling around to is that I get a massive kick out of this stuff. I love that this play we all had so much fun putting on back in 2002 has been sort of packaged and sent all over the world for others to enjoy and I cannot tell you how much joy it gives me to see other excited and having fun with the material.
If you’re on Twitter and want to share anything from your production of any of my plays, you can always find me @HillaryDePiano.
