This post was going to be an update on my June writing goals but, as is often the way with my strange and wonderful life, a whole bunch of exciting things happened as I sat down to write it and I’m too overstimulated to be contemplative about my original topic.
Here’s the shortest word count update I think I’ve ever done: In total, I wrote 39,069 words in June. I thought about downing my word count goal for the year from 500,000 to 365,000 but as tomorrow is the exact middle of the year and I’m only 25k and change behind 250,000, I’m thinking maybe I shouldn’t. Potato?
We’re behind but so much is going on here, potato is just excited about life, man. (I just noticed that’s the same mood I used the on the last update. Am I un-creative or just cracked out on life? You decide!)
Guys, life is crazy. Seriously.
Anyway, I’m now going to shamelessly tease you with some News From the Future!
Ever since I first published Three Oranges, I’ve been getting emails from fans asking me what other plays I had available. Emails like this, while making me feel very good that people wanted more content from me, also made me a little flustered because I’ve actually had several other plays that I’ve been sitting on almost as long as Three Oranges has been out. (One of them even pre-dates TLOTO by a good 4 years or so.) I’d promise myself up and down that I’d make those new plays my next top priority to finish editing and shop around and then real life would start up again and I’d push them back down the To Do list.
When I sold Three Oranges to Playscripts, I knew my audience for stage plays was about to expand rather quickly and that was the kick in the pants I needed to finally get some of the other plays into finished shape. I’ve been working my tushy off behind the scenes to try to get some of these other works audience-ready. (Hence the class I’m taking starting next week. I’m finding myself in need of professional help.)
Where am I going with this? Well, for the first time since I started this blog, I got to do something really cool today. I got to take the blog tag for “The Enterprise Play” (which is, of course, the play I wrote like an insane person in the middle of the night on a pad of paper from Enterprise Rent-a-Car) and move that tag from the parent category Works in Progress into the Published category. Because The Enterprise Play, which some of you were amazingly kind enough to beta read for me back in March, has a real, official title now and will be available to the public very soon. (How soon? I’m thinking it will be much like with Three Oranges where I found out it was available only because I saw it for sale. But this time I’ve already written my blog post so I’ll at least be a little more ready and can just move it from published to draft! 😉 Also, I don’t have to make a whole website for this one which is a huge blessing.)
I think part of what makes this so exciting is that watching one of those Works in Progress projects graduate to Published makes me realize that eventually all of them will. As my career as a writer starts to take some kind of shape it’s overwhelming and terrifying and so much freaking work but, in the end, awesome in the best possible way.
I love you maniacs. Have a good holiday weekend!
